Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus
This is an unfinished colour sketch of an immature Black-headed Gull, made from a dead bird. I'm fascinated by gulls - so well adapted, quick to exploit any resource, intelligent and, for the birders amongst us, often a royal pain to identify in immature or sub-adult plumage.
The sketch uses water-colour to build-up the base and then gouache to pick out highlights or deeper shaded areas. The basic shape and some of the plumage detail is roughed-in but was left incomplete. It's a slightly faded image as it is a scan of a photograph.
